Pago Calzadilla Opta

60% Tempranillo, 20% @ Garnacha & Syrah, aged in American and French oak for twelve months. Opta gets its name from the crystals found in the soil used to make optical lenses in surgical equipment. Dark cherry colour, very intense. Aromas of raspberry and cherries. Spicy hints of cloves, nutmeg and white pepper. Reminiscent of rosemary and hawthorn. Fresh but unctuous, providing volume. Well-polished tannins and precise balance between fruit and wood.

DO VINO DE PAGO, GRANDE PAGOS DE ESPAÑA
WHILE THE TRADITIONAL SPANISH WINE CLASSIFICATION WAS VERY DIFFERENT FROM FRANCE’S, SINCE 2003 THE NEW SPANISH WINE QUALITY LADDER IS EVOLVING TOWARD SOMETHING CLOSER TO FRENCH WINE LAW. THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE IN 2003, HOWEVER, WAS THE CREATION OF DO PAGO. THE PAGO CONCEPT REPRESENTS NOT JUST A NEW RUNG ON THE LADDER, BUT ALSO AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT METHOD OF CLASSIFYING QUALITY. PAGO MEANS VINEYARD, SO THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION OF WHAT CONSTITUTES A DO PAGO IS THAT IT IS A SINGLE ESTATE WINE. PAGO CALZADILLA IS THE SMALLEST ESTATE WINERY IN SPAIN IN IN THE VALLE DEL RÍO MAYOR, AT AN ALTITUDE OF BETWEEN 900 AND 1,000 METERS.
